practicality: (Leon Kennedy // Lone Wolf)
Because when I want to avoid homework, I research cosplay stuff! Pants are easy now that I've got a brand, care of the too-big pair (Propper International, and they're BDUs for those interested). The thigh holster is pretty easy, too, because it's nylon and an incredibly common style, so some ebay hunting should turn up a good deal.

The shoulder harness is harder - the closest I've find in new manufacture is Galco, which is 1) really expensive new 2) not totally accurate (much as we'd all like to believe that all of this is actually military-issue, there's bits here and there where I think the designers made shit up) - I may hunt ebay for that, or possibly do horribly indecent things to some cheap leather belts. He's got a double mag pouch on the right side which looks pretty much exactly like Galco's - the left is harder to tell, it looks like it may be a single horizontal mag pouch, but it's really unclear (I can pretty much only see it on the menu screen, with the Red 9 or semi-auto rifle equipped). I also have no idea where that cross-chest strap is coming from - I've never seen it anywhere else on shoulder holsters. It's also worth noting that the knife sheath isn't part of rig - it's held on with some heavy-duty black tape XD;

Gloves and belt and accesory bags I'm still investigating (watch, I'll make another post in half an hour with those, too), although I realized the other day I can totally re-use the gloves for Rufus (hooray one official art image). Gun-wise, if I opt to buy something new instead of using my cheap-ass dollar store one (it's as nice as some airsoft ones I've seen for three or four times the price), I'm going to go with the Blacktail, which the RE fanboys with too much free time inform me is a Springfield Armory XD-9, because I can use it for Ada, too.

I also need to cave and buy an actual binder - not just for Leon, but I've reached the point where I just can't do the ace bandage thing any more (there's a reason I did Virgil and mafia!Leon all Yaoicon), and Leon's the first new one I'm doing that needs binding. Underworks is looking like the best, but I'm going to investigate further. I may also cave and buy blue colored contacts, for Leon, Rufus, kind of Sephiroth (his are green, I know - I just need something lighter than brown).

Oh, any budding Leon cosplayers on the flist looking for a pair of pant? I'm trying to figure out what to do with the too-big pair - they're medium-short, so 31-35 waist and 26 1/2 - 29 1/2 inseam (which means if you're taller than 5'8", they'll be too short), and despite being used (as I got them at a thrift store) in great shape. Dark navy, poly/cotton ripstop. Too poor to give them away, sadly, but $15 plus shipping is a lot cheaper than anywhere else online.

yes, they're taiwanese.. but i've bought a couple styles from them and they all work really well. (i'm a 38D so that should give you some idea) i've never been able to use ace bandages and these... well, they're all i've used for the past few years. :)

What styles, out of curiosity? I've heard some good stuff, it's just that the Underworks is better documented, being a big fav in the FTM community, and if I'm going to shell out $40+ for a binder, I want it to be as best as I can get.

Can you post a pic of the holster your looking for? I might be able to give you some pointers.

The shoulder rig? Front (http://www.tokyo-tower.org/photos/leon/93.jpg), back (http://www.tokyo-tower.org/photos/leon/94.jpg), left (http://www.tokyo-tower.org/photos/leon/shoulder-left.jpg), and right (http://www.tokyo-tower.org/photos/leon/shoulder-right.jpg) (cleanest of the bunch, it's a high-res render).

You're the same guy who gave me advice about revolvers a few months back, right? I got a bit confused when I didn't recognize the username in my inbox.

Yeah, that was me, I think. I read the "Guns" community and then read the posts of the "Friends" of guns and that's where I see your posts. I'm a pistol instructor, but I'm also a SF fan, so I'm glad to help out where I can.

That holster doesn't look exactly like any real holster I know. The closest would be one of the Galco holsters, based on the connecting piece used in the back straps, but that's not exactly the same shape. The front strap that goes across the chest was typical on older shoulder holster designs, but isn't really seen that much anymore. I don't think any of the current Galco's have that front strap. I could be wrong though as they make more than one variety of holster.

My reccomendation is to go to the Galco website, find the phone number, and order a Galco catalog. I think that would be about $5. Sometimes you can get them for free at a gunshop or range. The catalog has alot of great pics you can study to see how the holster is put together and make your own version. You could either do the whole thing from scratch, if you have any decent leather working skills, or modify bits of existing components, like the mag pouches and straps, etc, to work. Having the catalog with the pictures and diagrams of how the shoulder rig is put togehter would help either way though.

Personally, I'd look for a used shoulder rig, either a Galco or something similiar, to start with. Hunt around on e-bay and some of the on-line classifies. Check out www.sportsmansguide.com and www.cheaperthandirt.com for similiar holsters that are less expensive as well.

Since your character is based on a game, and not the more detailed movie or anime, I think anything you do that looks good on it's own (well put together, etc) that is remotely close will look good enough to pass.

Well, I'm more than happy for the help - I'm probably the most well-versed of my friends about firearms and the related accesories (which isn't saying much), and it means I mostly have to turn the the power of Google for answers when I need to know something.

All the Galcos I came across photos of (granted, third-party sellers) didn't have the front strap. I did notice the back difference, and the prescense of what look like adjustment tabs on Leon's.

I'm not skilled enough to do the whole thing from scratch, unfortunately, but I may be able to manage the straps, and match the leather to the mag pouches and what-not. I was planning on checking ebay a lot, although when I looked the other night, most were going for pretty much retail price. I'll check out the other links, too, when I've got the time - thank you for the suggestions!

The big problem with costuming this particular game series (Resident Evil) is that most of the characters are some form of military or ex-military, and dress accordingly - the character designers are absolutely spot-on for some things, like Leon's pants, boots, and gloves, sort of on for some things, like the shoulder rig, and only vaguely close for some, like the shirt. So the challenge is deciding when it's best to be accurate to the game art, and when it's best to be accurate to the real-world stuff.

Btw, what's a binder? The only thing I can think of maybe is some sort of "boobie binder" (excuse the expression, but you know what I mean). If I'm right, that sounds really uncomfortable, even to me, and I'm a guy.

That's exactly what I mean, actually XD; The improvised ones are fairly uncomfortable, but there are manufactured ones (mostly for either transitioning FTMs or men with disorders tha cause excess tissue growth there - us costumers are just a side-benefit) that are designed to distribute the tension a lot more evenly and are apparently a great deal more comfortable.
