I went out and spent money today! Mostly on gas and video games. Bought Katamari Damacy, because I kept swearing I would, and Devil May Cry, because Jo told me to. And I do what Jo tells me to XD Initial thoughts:

Katamari Damacy
This game is crack. A lot of crack. But in a good way! I did the first couple objectives before getting stuck and moving on, but what I played, I liked. The controls take a little getting used to, but after one or two tries, they're not bad. The music is fun and catchy, the King of the Cosmos is both amusing and scary, and crabs make the best little squealing noises when you roll them up XD I expect to get thoroughly caught up in it once I get the hang of things a little better.

Devil May Cry
Totally Resident Evil and Shadow Heart's bastard child, in a good way. And the first bit of that may be particularly true - it looks suspiciously like Capcom reused bits of the RE engine for this game. This means that the graphics and atmosphere are beautifully dark, with the style of Shadow Hearts, but the camera angles and controls suck. Seriously. I've gotten really used to a certain control set-up I always use, and having the 'confirm' button where I'm used to 'cancel' being does not do good things. That aside, though, the combat feels really nice (About time I admit this - I do <3 RPGs, but only for the story. Hate turn-based battle, and I far prefer action/adventure-style gameplay), which I like. There does seem to be enough variation that it's not just hitting one button over and over and over. Addictive, so far, although I'm wondering what the hell is up with the talking molten lava spider XD

(Also, damnit people, post on Shinra's Finest XD;;)

Devil May Cry has a sleeker battle system as you continue on down the series... oh, and I agree, completely. RPG's are all about the story/character development. It's nice to get out of that medium for a while and just slam the X button until your thumb is hurting as badly as those zombies on the 3 dungeon in Castlevania. On that note...

Get Castlevania. =D

Ooh, nice. Do the awful camera angles disappear? I know Capcom got their act together on that in RE4.

The problem with Castlevania is that I've been told you really need to play the whole series for it to make sense. And I don't think I own half the systems the older ones were on >.>

You might try the Star Ocean games, then, if you haven't already; the combat is real-time and more action than menus (well, except for spellcasters, you still have to pick spells off menus XD;).

I'll check them out ^^ - what system are they for?

(Also, post as Hadrian, damnit XD; Please ♥?)

Star Ocean 2 is for the PS1 and Star Ocean 3 is for PS2 (the original Star Ocean is a Japan-only SNES game, and I have no idea if it's anything like the others). Amusingly, a lot of people commented that SO3's gameplay was stronger than it's story when it came out. First RPG I've ever heard that about. XD;

(Have posted!)

Ooh, shall check them out when I'm done with some of the games I'm working on right now XD

(w00t!)

What masochistic creature plays RPGs for the combat? Ouch. The combat is just a vague distraction while waiting for the story to play out.

Hee, this was one of the first PS2 games, so cut it a little slack ;). And is Dante not hot as all hell?

This is very true. Although, I suspect there are some people that like the ease of turn-based - I'm in general an action/adventure fan, even if the stories aren't as good as RPGs. Probably because I got introduced to video games by the Zelda series.

See, I'd cut it that slack if the flaws weren't the same ones that are inherent in what seems like practically all of Capcom's games up until RE4 XD But I am willing to overlook them for the fun it's been so far, talking lava-spider aside, and yes, Dante's hotness XD

They really need to stop using the phrase 'the legendary dark knight, Sparda', though. It's like Star Wars and 'I've got a baaad feeling about this' XD

The crazy pivot-move-run style was adopted in Resident Evil to make the games more difficult. As RE3 proved, it's far too easy to play when you can easily dodge a lumbering zombie. RE4 got around this by making movement immaterial, and swarming Leon with hordes of enemies around every corner, all of whom regenerate when he leaves.

But it's the Legendary Dark Knight Sparda! Not to be confused with the German bank of the same name! How else would you know the difference?

I'm just spoiled by Zelda, I think XD I always instinctively try to change camera angles in FFX, too. Although, it matters less there than it does in DMC.

Well, I suspect one of them is somewhat human-shaped, and the other is somewhat large and square. Although, now I'm going to giggle even _more_ when they say that XD

Katamari Damacy is beautiful, wonderous crack -- but the sequel is so far and away superior both in crack and in wonderousness. XD; (This is an awful comment).

That's all I can manage right now. *dies*

Considering I've spent most of the last couple of hours going 'Wow, that is a _lot_ of crack' (Also "Wheee, look at Dante jump!", although that's entirely unrelated XD), 1) you are forgiven for the incoherency and 2) I fear for my sanity and my free time whenever I get around to the sequel XD

Not only can he jump, but in the second and third games he can run on walls!

WHEEEE!!!

So, slashing him with Leon yet?

Date: 2005-10-13 06:20 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] momijizukamori.dreamwidth.org
Well, I've already discovered that he can double-jump up walls, which is terribly fun. I suspect this probably means I should buy the first Prince of Persia game at some point, because that has a lot of jumping up walls and running on walls and neat acrobatic stuff like that.

Should I be? (He _sounds_ like Leon - not the same VA, so I guess it's just dialouge similarities. They've both got _awful_ oneliners XD)

You haven't been waiting three weeks for a cup of coffee like Asher has, though XD;;
