MMO I want to be excited about but can't quite get worked up about - Final Fantasy XIV

(I tend to like Final Fantasy games in part for their worldbuilding - see Midgar and Spira - and I'm just not getting a feel for that from XIV. It seems so...generic high fantasy with chocobos :<)

MMO I didn't expect to be excited about and am - Guild Wars 2

(It looks gorgeous, and while the races play into some of the fantasy tropes they also all manage to look really unique. I want a cute little Asura already, augh. And the lack of extreme sexual dimorphism - contrast with WoW - makes me happy. Female cat people aren't hypersexualized, hooray!)

I also keep wanting to reactivate my WoW account, but most of what I want to do is raiding and as far as I know there are no non-shitty two-night-a-week raiding guilds, which is all I have time for right now. I'm an elitist bitch and I don't want to play with lousy players, but I think pretty much anyone who is a good raider is in a three-four raid a week guild which I just...can't do.

I had the same problem with FFXI. It never felt like the world really had the same punch that most of the games' worlds did. I've wondered if it can be attributed to the lack of an overall driving idea or plot - without a plot that needs a floating continent or a cyberpunk city, do you even wonder if you should have one? FFXI's world just kind of felt like all the places were beautiful and fascinating, but tragically forgettable compared to anywhere I've ever been in a game. FFXVI looks ready to make that same error in worldbuilding, and I can't get any enthusiasm for something that attractively bland.

Yeah, I think 'attractively bland' about sums it up. I know balancing plot and open-endedness in an MMO is hard, but seriously, this is SE. They have the money, they have the people, they're just...too busy making three different FFXIII games I guess :(

well, you could always post in the guild recruitment official forums and see if you get any bites :< that's how lauren and I found our guild - I didn't really expect we'd get anything since an spriest and a resto shammy pair looking for a 10 man guild seems kind of uhh specific but hey, what do you know :P

Yeah, I guess I could poke my head in XD I'm willing to sacrifice progression speed for having more time out of game but I don't really want to play with scrubs :( Hopefully I'll be getting/building a new PC after Christmas so I won't have my epic 5 FPS on AoE fights, haha.

I wouldn't necessarily judge immediately. I honestly thought XII was going to be a ridiculously typical worldbuild for a story that has sky pirates and princesses--it didn't help that I had a parallel drawn up for it compared to another game released for the Gamecube that wasn't FF at all. I was like oh. Deserts. Oh. Castles and flags. Oh, of course, wackyshit flying devices. FORTUNATELY, it proved to be as rich as any of the others.

I think it's going to feel weird right up until you're playing and experiencing it.

Of course, I'm a person who has to ~feel~ something to like it (just telling me to play/read/watch something because I'll like it won't get me on it any faster), so I don't know. :(

Yeah, I'm willing to wait and see, but MMO status means it won't have interesting characters to save it like a single-player game would :(
