practicality: (Rufus)
First, a neat little Shinra-centric AMV - I'm not actually a huge AMV fan, as I think many of you know already (attention span of a goldfish, here), but this one is well-put-together.

Second, a combination of introspection and food for though for some of the Rufus-writers on my flist. I've been reading through the BC scripts a little more thoroughly than I did when I apped Tseng for City of Mako many years ago, now (I also think that at the time, like...only the first five or six were translated), and I've come to the realization that BC!Rufus is a huge dick to the Turks. First he gets Veld reassigned, then he orders Avalanche to kill the Turks when they're standing right in front of him, and then basically throws Veld under the bus to save his own ass. Now, as I am a huge Rufus/Turks shipper in general, I realized I need to find a compelling reason for the Turks to stay loyal to him. Because honestly? Given the way Tseng is characterized in BC and CC, I can't see why he'd stick around after Weapon to take care of Rufus's sorry ass.The two possibilities Jon and I came up with is either Rufus doing something totally altruistic in secret and the Turks finding out about it, or putting himself on the line to save one of them. Any other brilliant ideas?

Also, two fun Turks facts for writers - they apparently have company housing within the main Shinra tower, and there is a hidden room inside the Turks offices where Rufus is held temporarily following his secret arrest. Yeah, that second one sounded like a set-up for porn to me, too.

Haha, I read the script for BC as well and got that vibe, too... particularly this: he orders Avalanche to kill the Turks when they're standing right in front of him. In my case, I said, "IGNORANCE IS BLISS," and pretended the true assery of Rufus never existed. Lol.

Seriously though... http://thelifestream.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2104

If you think of it like that, it might justify the Turks' loyalty later on in the FFVII timeline. Also, since Case of Shinra hasn't yet been translated, we can still only speculate as to why/how Rufus got out of the building, and why they stayed. *waits anxiously for that day*

lol I realized I didn't give much of my opinion. Well, I think 1) Both Rufus and the Turks can view that whole debacle as merely water under the bridge later on in their lives, or 2) This one might be a bit out there, but maybe they feel they owe Rufus? Since he struck that deal, everyone pretty much got everything they wanted, yes? Part of me never got rid of this (probably unlikely) scenario in which after WEAPON, all the other Turks actually came back to aid Rufus for helping them long ago.

Nah, but then again, did Rufus really help them. I only assume they all wanted out since they were on the Shinra hit list, but they were on it BECAUSE of Rufus...

THERE'S ALSO THIS IN ADVENT CHILDREN:

Reno: Who'da thunk? A lot of Shinra's people actually returned to work. I'm tellin' ya, this could be a fresh start.
Rude: Well, those left alive still have a lot to atone for.

So maybe it's out of sheer redemption.

ACTUALLY, I AM NOT MAKING SENSE ANYMORE. Let's just say they stayed because Rufus brainwashed them with his sexiness.

Yeah, I took that first bit as the reason why /all/ the Turks didn't up and quit, because I think if Shinra had actually killed Veld, Tseng would have hated them all for life. He seems to care a lot about his boss, and that seems like it would have been the last straw.

I hope Case of Shinra gives Rufus some redepmtion because honestly while fandom treats him as having a spark of human decency deep down inside, we never actually see that. He's pretty much always being an asshole, it's just how polite he is about it. BC shows the Turks as being on the whole good people who do bad things.
