I have a job! Produce clerk at a local organic grocery store - I start sometime next week, although I'm not sure when, still waiting for their staff trainer to get back to me. So now the apartment hunt begins. I'm in kind of an iffy situation where on a regular monthly basis, I can afford a $700/month place, but right now I can't pay the initial first month's rent because I only have $400 right now, and I'm not sure what to do about this...suggestions, anyone? UBC is in a beautiful location, but this means that anything within half an hour of campus is expensive.

Awesomely! *congrats & stuffz*

No suggestions, unfortunately, other than possibly borrowing from people and payin' them back later D:

Unfortunately, all my friend who'd lend me money are all as broke as I am.

^^; As I thought, based purely on the thought that that's probably exactly what others do. I know that I either borrow or get borrowed from; now we're all broke XD;

Good luck with the monetary issue~ Have a PH :3

I don't know anything about your school, but at some schools the office of financial aid will give short-term interest-free loans to their students. Even if your school doesn't do something like that, you could try talking to someone at the financial aid office as they might have good advice about where you could get a short-term loan without getting hosed on the interest.

Also, there is a certain sketchiness to them, but you could try one of those pay-day advance places. Do they have those in Canada?

Alternatively, you could just try explaining your situation to potential landlords and see how that goes. I realize that since this is your first apartment (I assume) and you probably don't have much of a credit rating that this isn't too likely to be wildly successful, but the worst they can do is laugh in your face, right? Perhaps you can impress them by projecting an aura of responsibility and youthful earnestness?
I'll try the financial aid people - I also need to go by the admin building to see if they'll refund the summer tuition overpayment instead of just crediting it towards fall term. The last one was going to be my tactic of choice - I think I can pull some fairly solid references, at least.
