Wow... took me so long to read this thread... let's make this thread the longest ever
then!
So... i'm a first year rookie trying to survive in this hell built by people who are thirst
for knowledge. And... of course my initial goal here was also medical school. But after
seeing the massive number of people trying to get into that "holy place", i was greatly
discouraged. But i'm still thinkin' about med school tho. I mean i think seeing a patient
recovering under your care is a really rewarding thing. But i'm not THAT passionate
about medicine, which is why i should also be thinkin' about other programs like
pharmacology or physiology maybe?
Now i'm really confused about what i should do with my life... kinda sad eh? I don't
have much volunteer experience, but an average around 90 in MOST courses (just
found out i'll probably end up with below 80 in Bio 121). What program do you experienced
UBC veterans suggest for me? I mean... what are ya'll doing, and do you like what you
are doing? What's it like to do graduate studies, and does it bring income?

Have I mentioned how much I dislike pre-med grade-whores? This same guy was whining about getting a mark in the high seventies in Bio 121 (the same class I pulled a 60% in first term, with a class average of 70%). Seriously, dude, you're the reason Chem 233 has 55% class averages. Go into pharmacology so you can make the big bucks, 'cause if I get into Microbi and find you, I'll hit you myself.

And I am totally making a t-shirt that says 'Yes, I'm in Bio. No, I am _not_ pre-med'

I think he should take an English course before he does anything else... ~_~

Bah, you don't need to be able to write to get into med-school!

...Yeah, I know. People in my progam make me want to kill.

Aaaah, pre-meds. :D The reason I didn't end up in places like John Hopkins or Penn where they are literally hardcore enough to send out a hitman after you if you're doing better than they are.

Oh god XD;

Although the important thing to note here is that in Canada, anything abouve an 80 is an A. Anything above a 90 is an A+. So buddy here is whining about having an A average instead of an A+

Ugh. Wow. I agree with [livejournal.com profile] grayhour, he should take an effing English course first DDD: Couldn't STAND to read his little whine. :///

And your commentary pnws. *thumbs up*
/cheese

The writing skills of most first year uni students, particularly in Science and Engineering, are really apalling, unfortunately.

... I see. And here I thought I didn't write well >_>; And I'm in Science too! o.o

This baffles me, truly.

XD;

PS: Does this mean the two of us are anomalys for being able to write well? XD

Well, we're not the only two, but yeah, there's a definate problem with Science students who see no point in the Arts, and vice versa. It's a bit depressing.

Heh heh, of course we're not the only two--just the only two that I know XD; And yeah, you're right--it sucks. :(

I know a few others myself, but it's distressingly rare.

-_- Yeah--outside of my family, I only know myself and you.

Well, Jo is an excellent writer, as is Skuld, who posted above you. I think my friend Rosie is good, although she's largely in Geology, which isn't so much one of the main hard sciences XD; They're here and there - a couple of the people in the Wargamers who do a lot of RP are in Science, although I don't know how they feel about Arts.

Ah, I see.

The problem seems worse in the opposite direction, honestly - every single Arts student I know has taken the cop-out Science classes like Earth and Ocean Science, which are geared to Arts students, instead of the classes Science students take.

I got a lot of surprised looks in my second-year English class last term when I told people I was a first-year English student XD; I dunno, Science is really my passion, but the Arts have a lot to offer, too.

That sounds about right--sometimes I hear such things from classmates, and I think, "Isn't that just stupid to do? If you're going to take a science class, then take one that's not shaped after your major, you cheapass." Well, that's normally my base reaction.

Yeah, you're right. And I'm actually surprised they're surprised.

Yeah...I have no idea what the Arts-for-Science-students classes are, although I suspect they exist XD; I was doing English-for-English-majors - thinking about minoring in English Lit just for the hell of it.

Date: 2007-03-23 05:33 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] ext_223426 (from dreamwidth.org)
*blink* Arts-for-Sci. students? ... They have such things? *haven't heard of that* Haha! Heheh, that's what I was doin' too--Eng. for Eng. majors--but then, the classes are kinda general "for everybody, and if you major in somethin', just take more classes suited to it" kinda deal ^^; Awesome. I think I'm gonna minor in Marine Biology/Oceanography--it's SOOO interesting. <33

Well, all the Science students must take _something_ to fulfill their Arts requirements...no idea what, though.

Date: 2007-03-23 07:04 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] ext_223426 (from dreamwidth.org)
Well yeah, that's a given, just... hm.

And I thought pre-med students over here sucked.

Pre-med students _everywhere_ suck, for the most part - there's a small handful genuinely in it to help people, rather than for prestige or money, but it seems rare. Mostly they just kill everyone's GPA and bitch a lot.
