It's quarter 'til three in the morning, and I really should be asleep as I need to be up at eleven thirty to drive home, but I'm having a massive moment of self-doubt about this fall. I'm leaving in four weeks, first to Toronto for a day or two, than out to BC, and right know, I'm wondering - is this really the right choice for me? I think I can safely say that out of the two places I got accepted, UBC is definately the better choice, but...I only applied to four schools, and I wonder now if I should have applied to more places in Boston, because while Vancouver is an awesome city, Cambridge and Boston are what I grew up with, pretty much. I'm going to miss the T, even - there's something about subways that buses just don't quite touch. And while it'll theoretically be nice to be closer to a bunch of my friends, without a car, it's still a four hour trip out to the island or down to WA, which is probably just long enough to keep me from doing it with any sort of regularity and make me totally frustrated in the process

*sigh* I wish I wasn't perpetually second-guessing myself.

*hugs* If it helps, our apartment is open to you anytime you want to come visit ^.^ And if you don't want to drive all the way down, I'm more than happy to pick you up at the ferries!

Can't wait to see you again! *waves*

Actually, from the look of it, I'd be taking the bus down to the airport there - as far as I can tell, the ferries only go from Victoria, which is an hour and a half bus + an hour and a half ferry ride + another hour bus, which is kind of ridiculous. I wish I had a car out there, because it's only a forty-five minute drive to the ferry terminal. Augh.

Thanks, though ♥

Wait, apparently I got confused somewhere. Are you already on the mainland? XDDDD Because if you are, it's no problem for us to just pick you UP XD Elisha and I only live like 15 mintues from the border.

Yeah, UBC is in Vancouver, not out on the Island.

Then it's not a problem for us to pick you up from Vancouver! XDDD It's a little bit longer of a drive, but if you ever want to come down to Washington, we can come get you, for certain!

Thank you ♥ I'll have to see how busy I end up being on weekends and stuff, I think. Haven't seen you guys in forever, though

I think everyone second guesses themselves at this point. Xeen is, too. So, telling you the same thing I've been telling her: no point in worrying about it now. You'll just see how it works once school starts, and worst case scenario, if you hate it, transfer. No worries.

...You know, that's the sort of directness I always manage to totally miss XD; Thank you.

Where's Xeen going next year, anyway?

She's going to Keene. Which is, like, an hour away, but freaking out about college seems to be a requirement no matter where you're going.

Yeah - even my friend Grace, who got into her first-choice school is freaking about roommate stuff.

Awesome icon, BTW.

Aw, but UBC is fun! (Get the choc-chip cookies at the SUB, they're awesomely delicious, that and the cheap pizza. Oh, and take a walk down to the beach below the cliffs near Ritsumeikan for the gorgeous sunset and pot-smoking hippies). The UBC anime club is friendly and I know someone there who helps organise the local con who's lots of fun (look up [livejournal.com profile] galaxychild). As a UBC student you get to buy a UBC transport card which entitles you to ride on any of the buses for free or a very reduced fee, and the bus system around Van is pretty good. As for getting to Victoria, the 4 hour trip is easy enough to do even to go down just for a weekend once a month or so.

I'll keep that in mind - I have no idea what the food in the freshmen dorms is going to be like D: And yeah, was definately planning on dropping by anime club, because my old school wasn't cool enough to have one.

I don't think they're actually giving me a choice about the bus pass, actually - I'd be getting something anyway, though, because my car is staying on the east coast.

And I guess some of it is that I'm just used to everything being close here in New England - I was doing a five-hour train commute up to visit [livejournal.com profile] moonything about once every two or three months for a year or so (really stupidly convoluted route - it's just under an hour and a half by car), but from where I live, I could hop on a bus and be in NYC in four hours, which I've done exactly once.

(And your icon deeply amuses me for some reason)

Which dorms are you in? Totem?

Date: 2006-07-30 08:16 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] momijizukamori.dreamwidth.org
Yep, although I now know one person over in Vanier, so I may end up eating there, too.

Date: 2006-07-30 08:22 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] ext_9109 (from dreamwidth.org)
You're right next to the beach cliffs :P

The few times I ate at Totem the food was pretty good, quite a lot to choose from, but hey, if you want to buy your own food I think there's supposed to be some sort of kitchen in each building? And the grocers on campus are good, though quite a long walk away from Totem so I advise using the security bus :P Totem IIRC also has a bus-stop, and I think you can take a bus from there down Marine Drive to the ferry terminal.

<-- was in Ritsumeikan right next door

Oooh, nice.

I haven't found mention of kitchens, although apparently the lounge areas have a communal microwave and refrigerator - I'm bringing an electric kettle with me to make tea and noodles and stuff.

BC Transit tells me I have to transfer somewhere downtown, for either terminal, although this may be lies - will have to ask around when I get out there, I guess.

I'm going to seriously miss you, man.

I'll miss you too ♥ Although to be brutally honest, we never talk on the phone, and I rarely see you in person, so it won't be that much different - I'm not exactly giving up AIM when I move ^^

Date: 2006-07-30 07:29 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] ext_287395 (from dreamwidth.org)
You are brutally honest... :x

Date: 2006-07-30 07:32 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] momijizukamori.dreamwidth.org
It's true, though - I've seen you...twice so far this year? Not counting AB. And talked to you on the phone once, when you accidently called me in NYC.

You can come visit us! If you go to the Departure Bay ferries it doesn't take that long from UBC. :D And I can get you on our side~

Date: 2006-07-30 07:44 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] momijizukamori.dreamwidth.org
It's actually only a fifteen minute difference in bus times to Departure Bay, but having someone to pick me up would be awesome ♥ I haven't seen you guys in like two years, which is totally pathetic.

Nah, distance is hard. Hope to see you soon! :)

Everybody has these moments of doubt when they leave for college. But you know, by and large people who go to college really enjoy the place they're at. Unless you're really emo or depressed, you'll love it. Personally, when I was applying to college, Princeton was my first choice school and I got rejected. Since MIT accepted me, I went. But I was kind of worried, what was MIT going to be like?

Now that I've been through four years of MIT, I realize that maybe that was the best school for me. I know now I wouldn't have fit in at Princeton at all, and I'm glad I went where I did. As long as you approach college with open-mindedness and a willingness to try new things and make new friends, you'll do great, and there's nothing to worry about. *hugs* I'm sure you'll find plenty of friends on campus, and I know you'll have fun.

Live it up, man. ;3 College is the place to try new things. Don't pass up opportunities, otherwise you might regret them later on.

I can't count the number of times I second-guessed myself when deciding on a college. Hell, I still am, and I've finally committed. Everything will be all right, regardless of where you go, even if it's an adjustment.

Date: 2006-07-31 08:35 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] momijizukamori.dreamwidth.org
Yeah, second-guessing seems to be a common theme. I just kind of got hit with it really hard because I'm kind of a compulsive worrier >.>
