practicality: (Leon Kennedy // Lone Wolf)
Oh my god, why did I not find out about Google Notebook before today? It is wonderful and fulfills my deep burning desire to organize things. I already have files started for Eva, Leon, and assorted gun info, although I may add one for Tseng shortly.

Speaking of, I just had the revelation that while I personally like revolvers better than semi-auto, Tseng would probably opt for a semi-auto, at least for work, for the pure and simple reason that they chamber more. Most of the large-caliber rifles are only chambered for six rounds, and you're supposed to leave one empty for safety. The large caliber semi-autos, though, hold ten in the magazine plus one in the chamber, and it's really easy to carry an extra magazine and switch when one is empty, as opposed to reloading a revolver.

Now to decide if he'd go for something more exotic than a 1911-style semi-auto or not.
(...And I totally need an Ada 'girl with guns' icon)

EDIT: Randomly, where the hell are all the cool RE people hiding? I know of a few interesting people over in the Claire/Leon bit of things, but I'm afraid to talk to them because almost all the C/L fans are some variety of Ada-hater and would either try to kill me or irritate the hell out of me, because while I like Claire, I like Ada too (Claire/Leon/Ada OT3! ...Yeah, crack, but it's fun crack)

EDIT 2: And the cool DMC people, too, although I know a few of those. There the problem is less crazy shippers as it is finding the ones who aren't totally bitchy.

I don't know if character research counts as a 'good use', but I don't care XD;

There hasn't been a need to only load 5 rounds in a 6 shot revolver for at least 50 years. All modern revolvers made since WWII have an internal safety that keeps the firing pin from hitting the primer in the cartridge if the gun is dropped. They are perfectly safe fully loaded and anyone who believes otherwise is operating off of old info.

Btw, Smith and Wesson has been making 7 shot .38 Special and .357 Magnum revolvers for about 10 years now. Their standard L frame 686 model and the newer 619 and 620 models are all 7 shot instead of 6.

Is your character a cop or private detective? Most police agencies have switched to high capacity semi-auto's, often chambered in .40 S&W. The Glock 22 and 23 are very common, but are not the only guns used. The Glock Model 22 holds, I believe, 12 rounds of .40 S&W.

For a private investigator, he could carry what he wanted, within the limits of the law. The 1911 has a long association with fictional hard boiled private dicks and is a good choice if he/she is made in that mold. If you character is more modern and less "world weary," a different gun might be a better choice, from a character point of view.

Btw, found your journal through Guns as I was browsing "Guns Friends" entries.

Ahh, I see. I was always told to load one less in the revolver, I guess just for an extra layer of safety.

The character is...well, something inbetween investigator, hired gun, and assassin - it's a little complicated to explain. The cetting is more cyberpunk, rather than real-world, and he's rather high up in the employ of the mega-corporation that basically owns and runs the city he lives in, so if there are laws about ownership, he's kind of outside of them. I'm not sure if he could really be described as 'world-weary' - more just very serious about his job. I can definately see him having an eye for the slightly more unusual, and the sort of money that would allow him to own something like that rather than something more standard. I will take a look at those Glocks, though. thank you.

And no problem - advice is always welcome from those more knowledgeable in these things to me. I'm newish to guns myself, but always willing to learn.

There is one exception that still requires the shooter to load five in a six shoot revolver. Some reproductions of the old Colt Single Action Army "Peacemaker" revolvers as used in the Old West will fire if the is struck hard or the gun is dropped if there is a live round under the hammer. These guns should still be carried with an empty chamber under the hammer. These guns are all either antique original guns or reproductions made for "Cowboy Action Shooting" or collecting and aren't commonly carried as self defense sidearms. Just thought I'd mention it though.

Sounds like a "World of Darkness" setting or something similiar. Since the world is fictional, my advice is to keep the specific model of the gun generic. Just make at an automatic and mention your character reloading when appropriate or checking to see how many rounds are left, etc. Another option is to create a fictional company that made the gun or use the name of a company established in the universe.

If nothing else, go to a big chain bookstore and browse in their "Hunting/Firearms" section. Look for something like "Handgun Annual 2006" or a similiar book. They'll list a variety of different guns and have details such as ammo capacity, etc. Those kind of reference books are a good resource for a writer. Writer's Digest also publishes "Armed and Dangerous: A writer's guide to firearms." Some of the info there is slightly outdated, but it's still a good resource.

Another great site for info on firearms is www.thehighroad.org It's a pro RKBA discussion site.

A little less in the way of gothy vampires and more in the way of genetic engineering that World of Darkness, but yeah. And I wasn't planning on mentioning any specific manufacterers or models, but it helps me to have an idea what it should look like in my mind.

I'll check those out, thank you!
