This week has been insanely busy - volunteering in the mornings (officially done, yay! Though I'm going to continue anyway), work (we have a radio now, and the pool vac has died again), Tuesday was Senior Night (surprisingly fun), and tomorrow, or rather, later today, is the Senior Breakfast, graduation practice, and then graduation.
Which probably explains why I'm still awake - too nervous to fall asleep. My grandparents are flying up from Florida, and to be honest, I don't really want to see them that much. I actually haven't been in the mood to see much of anyone lately, which is why I haven't been on AIM and stuff much. I think it's the stress - totally just need to crash for a few days when this is all done. Oh, and totally unrelated, but everybody who told me how awesome George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire was are right. Finished A Game of Thrones last night, and I'm going to head to the library ASAP to get the next one.
And I keep saying this, but people totally need to post on Shinra's Finest. Or someone needs to plot with me over in the Lobby or something, because I really want to play with Asher and Ally some. Any takers?

Date: 2006-05-17 05:50 pm (UTC)From:As for a character, I do have someone in mind, but it's someone who's hard to pin down with a single-word label. He used to be a Shinra employee, but then again, he used to be a lot of things. Half Wutanese ("Wutainese?" Simply "Wutai?") though has little connection to his cultural heritage, other than the fact that he lives in the Little Wutai area of the slums, above his father's apothecary shop that he inherited after his Dad died. See, his Dad was very well-liked in the community, a good guy who helped a lot of people, and now that legacy has fallen on my guy, only he doesn't think he really wants it.
Injured in the line of duty, he's on permanent disability leave from Shinra and has been for a good, oh, at least ten years. During that time, he's become the neighborhood troubleshooter of sorts. The neighbors all remember him as the kid everyone liked, the one who had so much potential and went off to a bright future working for Shinra. They felt so badly for him when he was injured, which is around the same time his dad died. I think they feel responsible for him in a way, and want to find him work (and they're also notorious matchmakers, something which he studiously avoids. One ex-wife is bad enough.) So they ask him to help out with their troubles and offer him trade goods for barter in return--he has a pig living in his back lot that he's never been able to bring himself to slaughter, and it's just gotten bigger and bigger.
Now, past his prime and pushing middle age, he's a stranger in his own culture and a reluctant do-gooder, wanting to either live up to everyone's expectations of him or to finally disappoint them so badly that they just leave him alone in disgust.
As for how he could know Ally, I'm not sure, but as for the plot, I was thinking perhaps something that seems simple at first--someone from the neighborhood approaches him to say that their son/daughter/cousin, who works for Shinra, has mysteriously disappeared, and Shinra doesn't seem to have a good explanation. They just want him to look into it for their peace of mind. In any case, I won't develop that too much right now in case it doesn't mesh, but I hope you get a good sense of the character, at least.
Again, thank you. I appreciate the opportunity.

Date: 2006-05-19 03:46 am (UTC)From:As for how he knows Ally - it's possible that he knew her father, who's actually also ex-Shinra (in the army and was discharged, most likely due to permanent injury), and thus sort of her, and then they run into each other again - does he need anything fixed? Fixing stuff is kind of what Ally does as a job, so he could have come to her with something and then been all 'Oh, it's you, I haven't seen you in ages!' or whatever.
I unfortunately probably won't be around much this coming week to discuss plot-things (con next weekend, so I'm going crazy with costumes to be done), but feel free to poke me when I do wander on.

Date: 2006-05-19 03:56 pm (UTC)From:And don't worry about you being busy--I'm on vacation this next week, and I anticipate being busy as well due to the fact that I've just been given the honor of cleaning the entire house and organizing the paperwork and so on. d'oh.
Interesting idea for him knowing Ally's father--I like it. How old is her Dad? Is he still around? I was figuring that my guy was more of a security guard type who eventually wanted to get into the army, but before that happened, there was an "incident" and he was injured--sword through the kneecap, still working out exactly what happened with that.
But anyway, I'll think a bit about what he might have to bring to Ally to fix, and which part of the slums he lives in. So yeah--I'll be working on beefing up my rough character sketch so I'll have some more concrete things to contribute.
