Decided to sit down and finally watch the episode with 1812, because seeing Serenity put me in a sci-fi kind of mood, and god, I remember now why I love this show so much XD;

Rygel: "When a woman, whether it's your wife, your lover, or a slave you purchased to be your wife or lover[...]"

Also, on Serenity (no spoilers, don't worry) - nice little sci-fi flick, although I think if I had been a fan of the tv show I'd have been a bit disappointed - it kind of smacked of the Farscape mini-series.

On an entirely unrelated note, the BPAL fall swap has begun, and I totally <3 the person I got. Huge geek! Yaaaay! (If the person who has me is reading this, uh, I forgot to mention on the questionaire what a great huge geek I am...science, video games, anime, manga, RP...I am totally there XD)

I assume you mean if YOU had been a fan of the TV show, you would have been disappointed, instead of implying that fans of the tv show would be. Because I can assure you, we were not only NOT disappointed, but thrilled with it.

And since I've never seen Farscape, I'll have to say I have no idea of the concept of it being ripped off. If it was similar, I have no doubt that it just happened that way, since Joss is more than creative enough to not have to borrow ideas...

I'm starting to understand why you misunderstood so many of my posts. Reading comprehension is a valuable skill, and knee-jerk reactionism is not.

Ah, verbatim.

Well, that's why I said I was assuming that she meant that literally, and wasn't talking for the fandom as a whole.

That was me stating that I was trying to verify one of two ways that could have been taken, not me having a knee-jerk reaction.

And, once again, I'll assume that you're lamenting the woes of the English language, and NOT insulting my reading comprehension, which is doing just fine, thank you very much.

And it's kind of hard to "misunderstand" the dislike of one's nation. But whatever.

*raises hand* Firefly fan here! Wasn't disappointed. Was rather on a Firefly-high and wandered around the town wanting to fight a revolution and generally consider it the best movie I've seen since ever. They changed Simon's characterization quite a bit, which is the only thing that might have been a disappointment, but it made sense for a movie that was supposed to appeal to people who haven't seen the series so I'm okay with it. Also am a Farscape fan, but evidently missed the Farscape similarity altogether.

Well, it was more that I felt like the Farscape miniseries was kind of just thrown out to get the fans to shut up, and wasn't actually all that great, and I know a couple Firefly fans who got that same sense from the movie, and my mom, who watches the re-runs felt the same way, so while I enjoyed the movie for what it was, I think I personally would have been disappointed if I was a fan, like I was with the Farscape miniseries.

And I dunno, whatever they did to Simon's character didn't really work for the audience that hasn't seen the show, mostly because he just came off as a prick with no personality, which apparently he's not so much in the tv series?

That must be a really small part of the fandom, because most of the folks on the forum and all the fans we know personally loved it.

As fras as Simon goes, I LOVED him in the movie, and Simon is my favorite character. He isn't, fortunately, the favorite of MOST of the fans in the series, which I find a shame. I'm not sure he's misunderstood as much as he isn't there for funny or bad-ass moments, and that's why most people like Mal, or Jayne, or Wash. But as an angst fan, I wholly appreciate what he does for River, and how much he gives up for her.

If he came off as a prick in the movie, people weren't paying enough attention to his motives.

I can see where the prick thing comes from, just from the movie - well, he took care of River; but his personality during the breakout scene was kinda, whoa, is there a reason Simon was keeping his mad action hero skills a secret throughout the series? You look at Jaynestown, where he wasn't a good enough actor to convincingly buy mud, and then you look at the guy who can come off as a stone cold government agent while he's looking at his mentally scarred sister. I still liked him, but he seemd a lot colder and confrontational in the movie, which could be where the prick thing comes in. ...granted he was confrontational in the series too, but there was a different vibe to it.

Yeah, in the interview, he did say that the one thing they really tweaked was the break-out, which Simon was never really a big part of originally. ::shrug:: It didn't bother me, but I suppose some people could have disliked him in the movie. It's hard be objective, those of us that "get" Simon because we knew him in the series.

But in Serenity (the pilot), he totally showed off some of his mad acting skills. He was super stuck up when he first boarded the ship, so I can see him pulling off a member of the military. Of course, as you watch the pilot and TV series progress, I think he looses confidence as he becomes more and more shocked by his surroundings, truly becoming a fish out of water with every weird and dangerous thing that happens.

And yeah, the vibes were a little different. He would have never hit Mal first in the series. Too barbarian...not to mention that oath he took there....:)

Ahh, I get that - the Farscape thing. I don't think Serenity was to get the fans to shut up at all, though; more like, Joss was going somewhere with Firefly, but it was cancelled before he had a chance to finish it. It wasn't even like Angel where he had time to wrap up all the plotlines really really quickly; they were filming The Message when they found it it was being cancelled, and that was it. And then Universal gave Joss a chance to finish the story he was trying to tell. So that was the feeling - from the series, it just stopped, there was no closure. Serenity was closure.

Well, I think part of it is that I know you and I had differing opinions on the end of Farscape - you liked it, and I was kind of like 'What? They just _left_ it there?'.

And I never watched Angel, because I wanted to throttle him in Buffy >.o

XD You needn't bother watching Angel, then; all the good points in it turned out to just be a warm up for what he did in Firefly - wes and Fred as proto-Simon and River, and that whole a-world-without-conflict-doesn't-work theme. Although Angel did have Dru and Spike sometimes, that was a plus.

I don't think Dru and Spike would outweigh me wanted to kill Angel, unfortunately - he really drove me up the wall. I will give Serenity this - it made me kind of want to check out the tv show. Which apparently is on the Sci-fi channel now.
