Yes, finally, my first 'I'm bored' post of the summer. Mostly because everybody that I usually talk to is busy or not online or whatever, and I'm trying to save the two books I checked out for my massively long trip on Thursday and Friday.
So...book recs? Music recs? Fic recs? And any good old-and-thus-cheap-used game recs? I'm bringing the PSOne with me to North Carolina, and I probably won't have any internet access, so I'm not going to have much else to do - bringing FF8 and FF9, although FF8 is really only getting played because people have sworn to me that there is in fact something resembling plot later, and Squall develops more personality than a rock, although I'm skeptical, which is why I haven't touched it since last summer.

Date: 2005-06-19 05:07 pm (UTC)From:Book recs- Across the Nightingale Floor, Last Herald Mage, Game of Thrones...I'm going to start Howl's Moving Castle soon.
Have you played Castlevania: Lament of Innocence? I enjoyed it, and I usually hate adventure/RPG type games. Can't beat Puzzle Fighter, either.
OH! Do you read P.L. Nunn's stuff? Her original fic Dynasty of Ghosts would actually be in my top five novels if it was a published work. 45 chapters, great characters and story. She doesn't edit her stuff, so she has grammar and spelling issues occasionaly (like mixing "prey" and "pray" up), but she knows how top weave a story and turn a phrase. Her Saiyuki, Weiss, and Ronin Warriors fic is pretty good, too.
I'm not sure what other fandoms you like to recommend fic, though...you know just as much as I do about X/TB fandom...

Will check it out - original fic is always appreciated ^^

Date: 2005-06-20 10:27 pm (UTC)From:you probably shouldn't play it until you've played a couple of other Castlevania games, most notably Symphony of the Night. The plot spoilers and and the story of the game just don't have that great of an impact if you're unfamiliar with the Castlevania storyline. It's not as cool unless you can fit the events of Lament of Innocence in with the rest of what we already know of Castlevania.
I have the ROMs for the GBA Castlevania games, Aria of Sorrow and Harmony of Dissonance. Let me know if you want them.

Date: 2005-06-19 08:20 pm (UTC)From:As for FF8... I do love that game so, but I often stop playing right at the end of the second disk, where both the plot and the characterization of the lead male do a complete 180 and it turns into a nauseatingly predictable romance complete with time travel.

Date: 2005-06-19 08:31 pm (UTC)From:And yeah, I think you've shared your mixed feelings on the game before - actually, the fact that you liked even the beginning was one of the reasons I'm willing to give it more of a chance, as I trust your judgement. I'm guessing Rinoa only gets more irritating as the game goes on, though?

Date: 2005-06-19 10:22 pm (UTC)From:Non-Fiction Books: On Killing by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, and Evil by Roy F. Baumeister. (Hey, I liked it!) Just do what I do and wander around B&N until you find something cool. Reference books can also be surprisingly interesting. If you can find it and are interesting in this sort of thing, you could try The Encyclopedia of Witchcraft and Demonology. (which isn't an occult book or anything) B&N also publishes a book called Encyclopedia of Heresies and Heretics by Chas S. Clifton that's kind of nifty.
Games: Probably doesn't for your trip help, but The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is like the best game I have ever played in my life. You can get it for PC and it should be pretty cheap.
Music Recs: Belle and Sebastian in general, Bad Religion in general ("The Empire Strikes First" in particular), Queens of the Stone Age's "Lullabies To Paralyze", Cake in general ("Comfort Eagle" in particular), Flogging Molly in general (though they are not for everyone, so get your feet wet before you commit to anything), and angst to Lisa Loeb.
Movie Recs: You didn't ask for them, but if you ever get bored and feel like going to Blockbuster... Secretary, because it is love. Latter Days. (< - hot gay Mormon alert!) Plata Quemada, since i'm pretty sure that your mom had mentioned she saw it, and if I am remembering correctly then she is the only person in the world who knows what I am talking about. (so you might be able to actually see it!) Umm...I'll say Snatch, but you've probably seen it, so go for 9 Dead Gay Guys. It's so the Gay!Snatch. Also, if you haven't seen it, check out Pi.

Will see what I can dig up of those - I've heard Comfort Eagle, and it will always be a Wolfwood song to me XD;
Movies are good too - I actually haven't seen Snatch, although I've seen other stuff by the same director. And she probably has. I'll ask XD;

That's how I found out about Morrowind! (erm, from my brother, obviously XD) I wasn't sure if you had an Xbox or not. You should steal it from him and play it. It's so much fun!
And you haven't seen Snatch? FOR SHAME. That's a great movie. Rent Snatch and 9 Dead Gay Guys at the same time! *L*

Date: 2005-06-19 10:27 pm (UTC)From:Movie Recs: "Lola und Bilidikid" a great German movie about the dynamics of homosexuality, alpha males, and the disparity between the Germans and the Turkish minority there. One of my favorite films of all time.

Date: 2005-06-20 10:36 pm (UTC)From:Definitely look for the Elric Saga. The first book is just called "Elric of Melnibone" and the second is "The Sailor on the Seas of Fate." It's pretty cheap to find these on Ebay, and they're really worth it. (If you don't like them, I suppose you could always sell them to me. I really want them, but haven't had the time to actually look around and buy them as of yet.)
If you're looking for games to play, you have to play Chrono Trigger. It's one of Square's classic greats. Just like how everybody has played FF6 and FF4 (anybody who considers themselves an RPGamer should have played these games), Chrono Trigger is one of those games you have to play. It's really easy to find a ROM of it these days. :D
And since you're into Sirius/Remus...have you read Sam's series "Stealing Harry?" It's really good. It's really rare that slash is written by a straight male, but well, there it is. :D

Date: 2005-06-20 10:41 pm (UTC)From:I have played, and beaten Chrono Trigger, actually XD; Ben has beaten it multiple times. I've also played FF6 and FF4 - 6 I've got as a ROM and need to finish, 4 I own the PSX port of and am bringing with me, but forgot to mention.
I've seen it around, but haven't read it :o Will have to have a look ^^

Date: 2005-06-20 10:53 pm (UTC)From:That said, you should play KotOR. (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.) Even if you aren't a Star Wars fan, the game is mad cool, because BioWare and Obsidian rule. If you have an XBox, you should play Jade Empire, and if you have the time and money, pick up God of War. Both really awesome games that have been released in the past 3 months. I've recently come to discover, previously being a Japanese game freak, that there are really really good American RPGs and action games. This is probably because I'm a little sick of the same old Japanese stuff. Definitely check out Jade Empire and God of War.
Destra is crazy about "Stealing Harry." She's my fic filter, she goes to The Pit of Voles and mysteriously finds good shit. O_o;; If you want fic recs, definitely talk to her. X3 Stealing Harry is one of the ones she's recced to everybody who likes HP slash, and she's only gone wrong on it once.
I'd rec you some HP/DM, but I have feeling you're not too hot on that pairing, so I will refrain. ^^;;

Date: 2005-06-20 11:01 pm (UTC)From:I actually have a started game in KotOR, and we own Jade Empire, although I just watched Ben play. I'll talk to him about God of War - the Xbox is kinda his and he has more money XD;
I am not opposed to HP/DM - I read anything that's well-written and convincing, pretty much ^^

Date: 2005-06-20 11:11 pm (UTC)From:God of War is actually for the PS2, so...I guess you don't have to worry about XBox-ness for that one. ^_^
Yes, you must play Jade Empire. I love the engine. It's so much fun. It's a little bit easy if you play on "Normal/Master" level, so if you're really looking for a challenge you should play it on "Grand Master." I just played through on Master because I wanted to finish it quickly before I moved. :x I really need to get myself an XBox (maybe I'll get the XBox 360 when it comes out), cause it looks like it'll be having a lot more interesting games in the future. (But then again, so is the PS3.)
There are a lot of features of Jade Empire which will totally make you go, "Whoa, deja vu from KotOR." Most notably the availability of Light Side/Dark Side paths, the conversation options, the menu screen layout, etc. etc. but the most important part is the fact that you have so many "battle styles" and actual active battle, instead of "select 'attack' from the menu." (Which I am very sick of.) KotOR is really awesome. :D You'll like it, I think. It's really hard not to like. ^_^
As for HP/DM, try to find Aja's "Love Under Will" and Maya's "Underwater Light." They're both amazing, but unfortunately unfinished. (Ugh, that just kills me, you have no idea.) "Love Under Will" is my favorite HP/DM of all time. :D *hearts* If I think of any other really good HP/DM, I'll let you know.
