I had the same problem with FFXI. It never felt like the world really had the same punch that most of the games' worlds did. I've wondered if it can be attributed to the lack of an overall driving idea or plot - without a plot that needs a floating continent or a cyberpunk city, do you even wonder if you should have one? FFXI's world just kind of felt like all the places were beautiful and fascinating, but tragically forgettable compared to anywhere I've ever been in a game. FFXVI looks ready to make that same error in worldbuilding, and I can't get any enthusiasm for something that attractively bland.
