Make-up: how do you get good at it? Just practice? Or is there some sort of great secret I should know? Because I like to think my sewing skills are pretty good, but my inability to style hair or apply make-up makes most of the photos look varying amounts of 'average' to 'fail'.

Haha, I am so far behind I don't even know what needs work. I only started using make up for cosplay, and only when I was like...fifteen or so XD So I missed out on a lot of the background. I totally fail at makeup. XD But practice helps, yes, particularly with the speed of application. There are tutorials, but I'm betting most of them aren't for Rufus XD For him I'd just go with enough foundation for your skin to look pretty much flawless and maybe a bit of blush to make him look less dead, but that's just extra, and if you suck at applying blush like I do, I wouldn't worry XD

Practice, pretty much. Also, my Kevin Aucoin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevyn_Aucoin) books. Thumbing through one at a bookstore might help enough that you don't need to buy it. Tutorials, whether video or print, can give me ideas or tricks I didn't think of incorporating before. ^__^

Yeah, that's my big problem - almost all the tutorials I've found are for somewhat feminine-appearing people aiming to look more feminine, which is not my direction. I actually totally hadn't thought about blush, but now that you mention it, that would solve my 'flourescent lights make me look like a zombie in photos' problem

I totally fail at makeup too, but if you're really stuck on method, there's YouTube. Seriously, a lot of people put make-up tutorials on YouTube. (One of my friends learned how to iron a shirt there!) They're pretty helpful, but of course, the ultimate maker of awesome is still practice, practice, practice.

Yeah, I need to get some better foundation - the one I have looks good in some lighting, but gets a bit zombie-shiny-white sometimes (http://www.tokyo-tower.org/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=2836). I hadn't thought of using eyeliner on the guys - I'm always afraid of my eyes looking too huge white girl as-is. Experimentation time! And that tutorial is very in-depth - probably good for the more feminine characters, though.

No, the amount of makeup!FAIL I've been through at cons is pretty horrific. Yeah, try YouTube. It's actually really good and informative for how-to's. I've found some great videos on how to apply eyeshadow to my mutant monolids. :p

Study stage and theater makeup. For speed it's definitely a matter of practice, but if you study show makeup you'll learn all the tricks about everything from proper coverage to crazy tricks like making realistic wounds. You'll also learn about how much color you need where based on what the lighting will be. People who look normal on stage look like clowns off stage, but that same intensity of makeup may be necessary for certain effects in normal lighting.

I never wear makeup, but being a backstage manager taught me everything about makeup I'd ever need to know. I'll try to find some resources for you, I don't have any of my books anymore but I'll find out what the titles were and see if I come across any good sites.

XD Yeah, it would. When you use foundation and it makes your skin ALL ONE TONE, sometimes a little pink to give it natural color that is taken away by the foundation is good. I mean, unless you're going for broken!Rufus, in which by all means do the dead skin thing. :D And some black eye makeup smudged on your hand, of course. ahahaha.

Yeah, cosplay is weird in that you don't have as much of the distance/lighting problems you have in stage make-up, but at the same time, you're usually going for much more dramatic effects than everyday make-up.

Titles would be awesome! I have access to a good network of libraries out here, so I can use the almighty library card for the power of awesome.
