Also I am a huge nerd in two entirely different ways for this - I'm thinking about rooting my smartphone (tech nerdy)

How is Ubuntu for using ssh to root around in your phone (assuming that's what you're using-- it's what I'd use on mine, but I've got an iPhone and IIRC your phone runs Android)? Did you have to do anything really arcane to make it work? I'm considering putting Jaunty Jackalope on my old iBook (community maintained PowerPC ports ftw), but not if I can't ssh into my phone with it.
