There is one exception that still requires the shooter to load five in a six shoot revolver. Some reproductions of the old Colt Single Action Army "Peacemaker" revolvers as used in the Old West will fire if the is struck hard or the gun is dropped if there is a live round under the hammer. These guns should still be carried with an empty chamber under the hammer. These guns are all either antique original guns or reproductions made for "Cowboy Action Shooting" or collecting and aren't commonly carried as self defense sidearms. Just thought I'd mention it though.

Sounds like a "World of Darkness" setting or something similiar. Since the world is fictional, my advice is to keep the specific model of the gun generic. Just make at an automatic and mention your character reloading when appropriate or checking to see how many rounds are left, etc. Another option is to create a fictional company that made the gun or use the name of a company established in the universe.

If nothing else, go to a big chain bookstore and browse in their "Hunting/Firearms" section. Look for something like "Handgun Annual 2006" or a similiar book. They'll list a variety of different guns and have details such as ammo capacity, etc. Those kind of reference books are a good resource for a writer. Writer's Digest also publishes "Armed and Dangerous: A writer's guide to firearms." Some of the info there is slightly outdated, but it's still a good resource.

Another great site for info on firearms is www.thehighroad.org It's a pro RKBA discussion site.
